I Saw Three Ships

The lyrics most commonly seen today in this English Carol have changed since its origins in the Middle Ages as to the identity of the travelers on the three ships. Historians speculate that the original three ships were in fact carrying the relics of the three Biblical Magi (wise men) from the Dead Sea near Bethlehem to the Cologne Cathedral in Germany, where they were to be placed in a specially-made celebratory crypt. Conveying the feeling of an exhilarating and much anticipated water voyage aboard a ship, this arrangement breaks the song out of its traditional 6/8 time signature to various alternating time signatures including 5/4 to enhance and capture the excitement of this musical journey.
